The next few days passed slowly. Each sunrise felt like someone had knifed him in the gut and then kicked it in until he couldn’t dig it out. It hurt every time she looked at him, and far worse when she refused. She handled the recruits alone, and Caius stayed away from her, not so much angry now as not feeling much at all. The days went by slowly and the sky cleared up, and Friday evening the two went home without having said a word to each other since Wednesday.
